ICANN opens domain flood gates

Today there are a limited but basic set of domains that people use for the websites, and as the domain extensions are limited there is a whole host who have to think up inventive names to overcome the problems when their favourite domain name is taken! The .com is the most sort after extension along with then the country of choice e.g. .co.uk. .nl, .es, and new ones that appeared lately like .eu, or old favourites .org or .net, but now the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) have opened the floodgates to what could be the biggest movement in domain names in recent history after a historic vote!

The ICANN has now approved a unlimited TLD (top level domain) creation for companies to do what they like, for example .coke, .pepsi, and the waiting list for companies wanting to get their hands on these is growing bigger by the day, the ICANN also announced general ones can also be created like .car for example but this is not for everyone! The application fee for these domains is going to be in the region of £115,000 and then on top of that an annual fee also implies around the region of £15,000.

With those sorts of costs being spoken about it will be the bigger companies that cash in on their own domains and with registrations being taken from January 2012 and closing in April on the same year, expect to see a whole different domain name battle taking place in about a years’ time on the internet!
